A last-minute bill to allow family members to petition a judge to remove guns from an individual, also known as “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation, has been introduced by House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross (D).
The new proposal was introduced with just three weeks before lawmakers adjourn and aims to create “crisis intervention orders, allowing a family member to report to the police and have firearms taken away.
The bill sponsor claimed:
“This bill will ensure that those people who are a risk to themselves and others can receive the help they need while preventing senseless acts of violence.”
Angelo Veltri, Northeast Regional Director of the National Association for Gun Rights rebutted:
“The Democrats are pushing a false narrative that gun owners are just ticking time bombs waiting to go off and want to erode due process in the name of a false sense of security.”
In addition to the “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation bill, a72-hour waiting period bill is heading to the Governor’s desk and a ban on private sales are still being considered in the Maine Legislature.
So far, 21 states, along with the District of Columbia, have some form of “Red Flag” laws on the books already.
The National Association for Gun Rights vehemently opposes any form of “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation.
